According to the American Cancer Society, 2-4% of cancers diagnosed in the United States each year occur in the oral cavity, including areas like the lips, tongue, gums, and throat. With approximately 30,000 new cases of oral cancer diagnosed annually, early detection can significantly improve the chances of survival. Unfortunately, over 50% of oral cancer cases are diagnosed in advanced stages, which reduces long-term survival rates. That’s why regular screenings are so important.

What is Oral Cancer Screening?

Oral cancer screening is a quick, non-invasive examination that helps detect early signs of cancer or precancerous changes in the mouth, lips, tongue, gums, and throat. Cancer often starts with subtle tissue changes that are not visible to the naked eye, which is why routine screening is crucial for early detection.

How ViziLite Plus® Works

At Stuyvesant Dental, we use ViziLite Plus®, an advanced early detection system that enhances our ability to identify oral cancer in its earliest stages. This technology uses an acetic acid solution that is swished around the mouth. The solution reacts with abnormal tissue, which then appears white under a low-energy wavelength light, while normal tissue appears dark. This allows us to spot abnormalities that might not be noticeable through a visual exam alone.
  • If abnormal tissue is detected, we mark the area with a special dye for further examination.
  • If necessary, we refer the patient for evaluation and/or biopsy by a specialist.

Why Oral Cancer Screening is Crucial

  • Increased Survival Rates: Early detection is key to successful treatment, as it improves survival rates and reduces the need for invasive treatments.
  • No Apparent Risk Factors: Oral cancer can occur in patients with no apparent risk factors, making routine screenings essential for everyone, regardless of lifestyle.
  • Better Treatment Outcomes: Early-stage oral cancer can often be treated more effectively, with fewer long-term complications or disfigurement.

Risk Factors for Oral Cancer

While 27% of oral cancers occur in individuals with no apparent risk factors, certain factors increase the likelihood of developing oral cancer:
  • Age: Those aged 40 and older are at higher risk.
  • Tobacco and Alcohol Use: The combined use of alcohol and tobacco significantly increases the risk.
  • Sun Exposure: Overexposure to sunlight increases the risk of lip cancer.
  • Previous Cancer Diagnosis: A history of cancer may increase the likelihood of developing oral cancer.
  • Family History: Oral cancer can run in families, increasing the risk in some individuals.
